Senior Lunch Farm Initiative
A long time social program for San Pedro Apostol is the senior lunch program. The parish serves lunch for 30 to 50 seniors 5 days a week. Many of the folks that enjoy this daily meal have no local family to support them and are hard pressed to provide for themselves.
It is also difficult for the parish to fund these noon meals, and especially hard to provide meat. The building where the lunch is served sits on about 4 acres of land. Padre Alexis proposed a farming operation to provide meat and funds not only to support the senior meals but the parish as a whole. The parishes in Shelby County partnered with Padre to create a farm operation that includes chickens for meat and eggs, goats for meat, and cattle to sell. The local San Pedro Apostol parishioners are donating the calves.
The Zaccone family from Harlan donated and planted 5 fruit trees in memory of Paul Zaccone. Sometime in the coming years the seniors will be enjoying juice from the lemon and orange trees, and avocados with the main dish.
The farm operation is well on its way as you can see by the following photos.
