English Classes
Part of our mission is to support the people of San Pedro Apostol in their efforts to lift themselves out of poverty. Padre Alexis believes education can play a major role, and becoming fluent in English is a skill that will go a long way in helping a person find a good job in Nicaragua.
Padre Alexis hired Matilde to teach the 1st English class in 2015. Several parishioners from Shelby County traveled to Villa Sandino to assist her. Out of that experience came the idea to create a more intense English class for 2016.
Students in Villa Sandino take English in the secondary school. The idea was to have the class during the students January recess from classes. With the help of Betsy Gran a professor at a Kansas City college we developed the curriculum for beginners and intermediate students. The classes were for 2 hours a day, 4 days a week, for a period of 6 weeks. There was also an evening class for adults. We hired 4 local people to be the primary teachers, and 13 travelers from Shelby County, and 1 from Indiana supported their efforts at different times. Sarah, a Notre Dame student helped out for 2 weeks, and Tom Zaccone taught for 5 weeks.
The class was a great success with over 70 students participating for all or part of the class. In addition to the 6 week course, a computer lab was created. Six lap top computers with English language software allows students to continue to improve their English skills throughout the year.
